A derailed metro train was stopped dead in its tracks from plummeting into the water by a massive whale sculpture at De Akkers station in Spijkenisse, near the port city of Rotterdam on Monday morning.
The driver of the train, who was the only person on board, was unharmed and has been arrested for questioning by the police.
The front carriage of the train was left hanging 10 meters (30 feet) above the water, propped up only by the sculpture ironically called "Saved by the Whale's Tail."
Carly Gorter, spokeswoman for the local authority said that it was incredible to see how the whale's tail actually saved the driver.
"The metro went off the rails and it landed on a monument called Saved by the Whale's Tail. So that literally happened," Gorter commented.
She added that a team of experts is now on-site to assess how they can remove the train when they can't use a crane due to the surrounding water.
"We have a lot of wind at the moment and that's one of the issues that we're facing, that's a risk and worry," Gorter stated.
The investigation for the bizarre metro accident is still in full swing.
