Alaskan Congressman Don Young, who ridiculed the coronavirus as a "beer virus" was reported to have tested positive for it on Thursday, November 12.
Representative Young, the 87-year-old Republican who is Alaska's only member for the U.S. House of Representatives announced the situation on Twitter.
"I have tested positive for COVID-19. I am feeling strong, following proper protocols, working from home in Alaska, and ask for privacy this time," he said.
The announcement made by Representative Young on Thursday warned that health care and public safety systems were at risk of being overpowered by the blasting spread of the virus across Alaska.
Representative Young, the longest-serving member of the congress who was just re-elected to his 25th term, said in March that the concerns of COVID-19 were "created primarily by hysteria."
"I call it beer virus. How you like that?" he said in March at a senior center in Palmer, Alaska, in a mocking reference to the Corona beer.
He added that though the virus attacks senior citizens like him, the people need to go forth with everyday normal activities.
