Based on a report given to Inquirer.net, the Sigue Sigue Sputnik gang initiated the brawl in the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) after they discovered that their companions were killed last October 9, 2020.
The gang immediately launched a fighting spree against their rival, the Sigue Sigue Commando group, which lead to the death of its two members.
According to the report, there was a mention of a certain "Ding" and a certain "Bensar", an Abu Sayyaf member, who allegedly led the killing of the Sigue Sigue Sputnik gang members before the riot.
The report did not state why the two gangs are in conflict.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra ordered the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to investigate this matter as he claimed the report given by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) was "rather raw."
“What I want to know is how such a violent incident could happen in the wee hours of the morning and last for hours, and why the prison authorities failed to detect and prevent such a huge gang war that left many inmates dead or injured,” he said.
The BuCor thanked the Secretary of Justice for the guidance and support given on this investigation.
