A riot broke out between two rival gangs inside the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) before dawn on October 9, 2020.
Nine dead bodies were found after the authorities handled the commotion as confirmed by the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor); seven casualties were from the Sputnik gang and two from Commando.
According to former BuCor Spokesman and Assistant Secretary Gabriel Chaclag, the fight started at 2:30 a.m. at the NBP quadrant but was quickly contained by prison authorities.
BuCor added that seven other inmates were injured and treated at the NBP Hospital.
"Nakausap na po natin 'yung kani-kanilang leaders at nangako po sila na wala na pong gulong mangyayari from here on, at 'yun naman po ay pinanghahawakan natin dahil sila rin po ang kawawa", Chaclag stated.
With a high number of population rounding up to 18,000, Chaclag explained that the guards do not monitor the prisoners 24/7. Nevertheless, the situation has been handled and the incident is under investigation.
"Malalaman din po natin kung ano ang pinag-ugatan at kung ano ang naging pinagmulan", Chaclag said.
