Great white shark attacks, wounds Australian surfer

An Australian surfer said on Monday how he paddled back to shore and walked to ask for help after being attacked by a great white shark on the sea.

The 29-year-old victim had a sensation on his left side like "being hit by a truck" as he was enjoying a normal day surfing off on Australia's southern coast on Kangaroo Island.

The great white shark bit the surfer on various areas and took a bite off his surfboard.

"It bit me around my back, buttock and elbow and took a chunk out of my board."

"I got a glimpse of the shark as it let go and disappeared," he added.

A member of the public took the victim from D'Estrees Bay and met paramedics, police said.

Michael Rushby, ambulance leader, helped stabilize the man suffering from "serious lacerations" before preparing an emergency airlift to the mainland.

South Australia Police said the injuries were not life-threatening.

The surfer said, "I'm feeling incredibly lucky and grateful, and I'm optimistic I'll make a full recovery."

According to statistics by the Taronga Conservation Society Australia, eight fatal shark attacks in Australian waters have been recorded for this year.
